Hi! I'm your Secret Santa (a la Dr. M) and I'm not exactly sure how I'm supposed to do this and, of course, I don't know you at all and have never read your blog until today, so I wasn't sure what to get you. But, I scrolled through your posts (and enjoyed them very much -- love the kitties). Generally speaking, I'm of the opinion that you can't go wrong with booze when gift giving, so I'm giving you a bottle of Cruzan Estate Dark Rum. It's awesome and I hope you'll enjoy it over the holidays. Very nice to meet you!
A list of places and events that we love about this area! With a name like this, it has to be Appalachia: Meadows of Dan, VA Mouth of Wilson, VA Laurel Bloomery, TN Loafer's Glory, NC Forks of Ivy, NC
Our home of four years now, where you are always welcome. Come on up to the house, y’all!
The Appalachian Trail at Cross Mountain Road
Easily accessible with stunning views into Virginia and Tennessee. The first half-mile or so of the trail wanders over lush hayfields of a century-old farm and overlooks Shady Valley, including the Nature Conservancy's historically and environmentally important Cranberry Bogs. From there you enter the deep woods where wild turkey, deer, coyote, and other critters roam. This leg of the vast AT is a great day hike or a short walk in the woods.http://www.nps.gov/appa/http://www.appalachiantrail.com/http://www.trailplace.com/
Home to the International Storytelling Center, this town’s main street is a postcard come to life. Music on the Square in the summer, the Storytelling Festival in the fall, and the year-round Contra dances make it a great place to visit anytime.Check out these links for more about things going on in Jonseborough:http://www.musiconthesquare.com/http://www.storytellingcenter.net/http://www.jonesboroughtn.org/
West Jefferson, NC
This sleepy little town came back to life a few years ago when some smart people decided to make it an art gallery destination. Just east of Boone, it makes for a great day of browsing, along with the galleries in Boone and the Churches of the Frescoes.http://www.ashechamber.com/whatstodo7.htm
Churches of the Frescoes
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson and Holy Trinity in Glendale Springs boast some beautiful frescoes, paintings, and sculptures. The drive is as beautiful as the destination. One of the paintings is by an old school mate of John’s, who still lives in Little Falls!http://www.churchofthefrescoes.com/
I stopped and asked them about their name one day. Seems they used to deal in Ginseng as well as tin cans. Note: Elizabethton Herb and Metal is no more. They are now OmniSource Recycling. Ah well. At least I have my memories!

fun times. I make "stars and bells" and my wife makes these great pecan and toffee flavor bombs. Cookies are among the best of Xmas traditions.
Merry Merry!
